How to Walk on the Path of Life

(A part of this mail is in Hindi)

When I was very young, not long after I came to Parmarth Niketan, a very
old, revered saint came to Rishikesh to give his divine satsang at
Parmarth
Niketan. However, rather than staying in the comforts of the ashram, he
used
to stay in a small hut on the banks of Ganga a little bit away from the
center of the ashrams.

I was given the special seva of going to pick him up each morning and
bring
him to the ashram. As we walked through the busy marketplace, I would
try to
push everyone and everything out of his way so that this revered saint
could
walk comfortably and unimpeded to the ashram. I asked everyone along the
way, Side please. Please give us the way to walk. I would gently push
all of
the wandering cows out of his path. I moved standing bicycles and fruit
carts out of the way so he could pass.

Finally as we reached the gate of the ashram I was feeling very glad
that I
had been able to bring him so safely and smoothly to the ashram, and
that I
had been able to clear such a nice path for him to walk. This saint,
however, looked at me lovingly and said, Beta, kis kis ko hatate rahoge?
Aur
kab tak hatate rahoge? My child, how many people and cows can you push
out
of the way?

For how long can you move other people and things out of your path? That
is
not the way. Apna rasta banate jao. Apna rasta banake nikalte jao. Do
not
try to move others; rather find your way between the others and around
them.
Make your own path, but do not worry about moving others. Find your own
way
in the midst of the chaos. In our lives we frequently get frustrated and
broken by feeling that others are blocking our way and thwarting our
path.
We blame their presence and their actions for our own failure. We
explain to
ourselves that we would have been able to succeed if only they had let
us,
if only they had moved out of the way for us. We try to push people and
obstacles aside to clear a way for ourselves in life.

However, obstacles never stop coming. People who are jealous never stop
trying to block our path. For how long can we try to move them aside?
How
many obstacles, how many enemies can we try to push away? The answer is
to
simply find our own way, around them, between them. If they are blocking
the
path on the right, we walk on the left. If they are blocking the path on
the
left, we walk on the right. We must be more concerned about finding our
own
way rather than focusing on moving all of those whom we think are
blocking
our path. For those who are pure in mind, thought and deed, there will
always be a path in which to walk. The path may be narrow at times and
it
may seem that obstacles and enemies line both sides. But we must humbly
and
sincerely make our own way on the path of life.

We must just keep walking the path of our dharma, the path of
righteousness,
the path of honesty, purity and piety without worrying about those who
try
to block our way. So much of our precious time, energy and focus are
wasted
in the futile task of trying to remove obstacles and other people from
our
path. It is not necessary. Find your own path around the obstacles. Find
your own path around the enemies. Do not try to push them aside or push
them
down or fight them for the right of way. Rather, carefully examine the
situation and see where the path is clear. Then, choose that path and
continue on your way. The more attention we give to those who are trying
to
sabotage us and trying to thwart our progress, the less time and energy
we
have to walk to right path. In that way, then, the enemies win, for they
have stolen our peace of mind, our tranquility, our joy and also our
time.
Instead of trying to fight them out of the way, we must remain humble,
pure
and single-minded on

the goal. If we can see our destination clearly then we will always be
able
to find a path in which to walk. So, keep the destination firm in your
mind.
Stay focused on the goal and nikalte chale, nikalte chale jao [move
around
the obstacles and continue on the path.].

Life Is Beautiful
-Tanushree

Look through my eyes, life is beautiful
If you search, happiness is still plentiful.
Still the birds are singing on the distant withered tree
When the tree doesn't give up, why should we?

Life isn't all about making money
Gaining trust is what you should seek on this journey.
Remember there are only setbacks but no failures
To succeed know that you are YOUR only savior.

Millenniums have passes but the distant sun still shines
So why do you sit back and whine?
Relish the beauty of the crimson sky
Free yourself and go on to fly high.

Every small thing in this great world has its beauty
And I feel to admire it is our duty.
Life is not about stopping but to continue and learn
And whenever you are down think of the shining sun.

In all its majesty, all its grandeur
Life always has to offer more.
If you ever see this world in shades of gray
Don't cry, do not dismay.

Look through my eyes, you will see
Life is indeed beautiful, for both you and me.

Big God

Two men went fishing. One was an experienced fisherman, the other
wasn't.
Every time the experienced fisherman caught a big fish, he put it in his
ice
chest to keep it fresh. Whenever the inexperienced fisherman caught a
big
fish, he threw it back.

The experienced fisherman watched this go on all day and finally got
tired
of seeing the man waste good fish. "Why do you keep throwing back all
the
big fish you catch?" he asked.

The inexperienced fisherman replied, "I only have a small frying pan."

Sometimes, like that fisherman, we throwback the big plans, big dreams,
big
jobs, big opportunities that God gives us. Our faith is too small.

We laugh at that fisherman who didn't figure out that all he needed was
a
bigger frying pan, yet how ready are we to increase the size of our
faith?

Whether it's a problem or a possibility, God will never give you
anything
bigger than you can handle. That means we can confidently walk into
anything
God brings our way.

You can do all things through God. Nothing is too big for God.

REMEMBER:

Stop telling God you've got big problems.
Tell your problems you've got a BIG GOD!

The Magic Of Love

Love is like magic
and it always will be,
For love still remains
life's sweet mystery.

Love works in ways
that are wondrous and strange
And there's nothing in life
that love cannot change!

Love can transform
the most commonplace
Into beauty and splendor
and sweetness and grace.

Love is unselfish,
understanding and kind,
For it sees with its heart
and not with its mind.

Love is the answer
that everyone seeks...
Love is the language
that every heart speaks.

Love can't be bought,
it is priceless and free,
Love, like pure magic,
is life's sweet mystery!

A Pound Of Butter

There was a farmer who sold a pound of butter to the baker. One day the
baker decided to weigh the butter to see if he was getting a pound and
he
found that he was not. This angered him and he took the farmer to court.

The judge asked the farmer if he was using any measure. The farmer
replied,
amour Honor, I am primitive. I don't have a proper measure, but I do
have a
scale." The judge asked, "Then how do you weigh the butter?" The farmer
replied "Your Honor, long before the baker started buying butter from
me, I
have been buying a pound loaf of bread from him. Every day when the
baker
brings the bread, I put it on the scale and give him the same weight in
butter. If anyone is to be blamed, it is the baker."

What is the moral of the story? We get back in life what we give to
others.
Whenever you take an action, ask yourself this question: Am I giving
fair
value for the wages or money I hope to make?

Honesty and dishonesty become a habit. Some people practice dishonesty
and
can lie with a straight face. Others lie so much that they don't even
know
what the truth is anymore. But who are they deceiving? Themselves---
more
than anyone else.

Honesty can be put across gently. Some people take pride in being
brutally
honest. It seems they are getting a bigger kick out of the brutality
than
the honesty. Choice of words and tact are important

The Closest thing to an Angel
-Dellena Wyrick

How does one compare such Purity? I can only say,
the closest thing to the Angel is the child that looks my way,
How Pure is the heart not yet taken by the world, how lovely is
this smile that is given to me,
watching this child somehow gives me perfect peace.
Stretching out its hands, placing words directed to me,
I dont know what is being said, but I am sure I would agree...

The closest thing to an Angel is sitting at my side,
taking my hand with wonders in his eyes....
I can only imagine what this child has rushing through his mind,
why are these so big, what has happened to mine?.

I almost held an Angel today, well I did hold the closest thing..
He smiled at me, he took my hand, he showed me what I missed...

The Purest heart is always there yet, in time it loses its way
Sometimes it takes a child to bring us back to see
the closest thing to an Angel was once you and me...

Consideration

One day, a ten - year - old boy went to an ice-cream shop, sat at a table
and asked the waitress, "How much is an ice-cream cone?"

She said, "seventy five cents."

The boy started counting the coins he had in his head. Then he asked how
much a small cup of ice-cream was.

The waitress impatiently replied, "sixty five cents". The boy said, "I will
have the small ice-cream cup."

He had his ice-cream, paid the bill and left. When the waitress came to pick
up the empty plate, she was touched. Underneath were ten one-cent coins as
tip. The little boy had consideration for the waitress before he ordered
his ice-cream. He showed sensitivity and caring. He thought of others before
himself.

If we all thought like the little boy, we would have a great place to live.
Show consideration, courtesy, and politeness. Thoughtfulness shows a caring
attitude.

The Most Beautiful Heart

One day a young man was standing in the middle of the town proclaiming
that
he had the most beautiful heart in the whole valley.

A large crowd gathered and they all admired his heart for it was
perfect.
There was not a mark or a flaw in it. Yes, they all agreed it truly was
the
most beautiful heart they had ever seen. The young man was very proud
and
boasted more loudly about his beautiful heart.

Suddenly, an old man appeared at the front of the crowd and said, "Why
your
heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine." The crowd and the young man
looked at the old man's heart. It was beating strongly, but full of
scars,
it had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in, but

they didn't fit quite right and there were several jagged edges. In
fact, in
some places there were deep gouges where whole pieces were missing.

The people stared "How can he say his heart is more beautiful?" they
thought.

The young man looked at the old man's heart and saw its state and
laughed.
"You must be joking," he said. "Compare your heart with mine, mine is
perfect and yours is a mess of scars and tears."
"Yes," said the old man, "Yours is perfect looking but I would never
trade
with you. You see, every scar represents a person to whom have given my
love
- I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they
give me
a piece of their heart which fits into the empty place in my heart, but
because the pieces aren't exact, I have some rough edges, which I
cherish,
because they remind me of the love we shared."

"Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person
hasn't
returned a piece of his heart to me. These are the empty gouges - giving

love is taking a chance. Although these gouges are painful, they stay
open,
reminding me of the love I have for these people too, and I hope someday

they may return and fill the space I have waiting. So now do you see
what
true beauty is?"

The young man stood silently with tears running down his cheeks.

He walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect young and
beautiful
heart, and ripped a piece out. He offered it to the old man with
trembling
hands. The old man took his offering, placed it in his heart and then
took a
piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young

man's heart. It fit, but not perfectly, as there were some jagged edges.

The young man looked at his heart, not perfect anymore but more
beautiful
than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his.

They embraced and walked away side by side.

Masks Unveiled ......

There have been moments in my life ,
Where i turned and looked into the face of life ....
I saw an image of what i thought was me ,
A dasmel with hope as her guard in the dark nights ...
A prayer in the heart of those who have seen grey shades even in the
brightest spark of light ,
Pride of what she was made up of , from the tides of failures and
success ,
Determination so strong to , survive the journey of tribulances and
reach
her destination.
Thoughts , that reflected Independence of mind and body .
But sudden volacanic eruptions of time and cirumstances made me look
beyond
the reflections of my image ,
So many masks i had worn to hide the real me ,
To hide the pain , to silence myself when i wanted to scream ,
To crub the need for a shoulder to cry on , with a belief of
independence
in my mind ,
To voice my opinion , when realites quitened me ,
Times as such reflect we are not only made up of what we are but of what
we
also potray what we are not
No one takes the pride in being a coward or a loser ,
So we all wear mask to hide ourselves from our conseiunce ,
But the courage is not always in fighting but also in accepting defeat
,
In unveling all the burden of masks we carry throught our lives ...
To free ourselves from the fear of opinions ...
To realise the value of selfworth ,
To see beyond from what others forsee us as .

The Road Of Life

At first, I saw God as my observer, my judge, keeping track of the
things I
did wrong; so as to know whether I merited heaven or hell when I die. He
was
there sort of like a picture of a president. I recognized His picture
when I
saw it, but I really didn't know Him.

Later on when I met Christ, it seemed as though life was like a bike
ride,
on a tandem bike, and I noticed that Christ was in the back helping me
pedal. I don't recall when he suggested we change places, but life has
not
been the same since.

When I had control, it was rather boring, and predictable . . . It was
the
shortest distance between two points. But when He took the lead, He knew
the
exciting paths to take, up mountains, and through rocky places at
breakneck
speeds -- it was all I could do to just hang on! At times it seemed like
madness. He said: "Pedal!"

And by faith I did, although I worried and was anxious. "Where are you
taking me?" He laughed, but no answer, and I started to learn to trust.
I
forgot my boring life and entered into the adventure.

When I'd say, "I'm scared," He'd lean back and touch my hand. He took me
to
people that had gifts that I needed. Gifts of healing, acceptance, love,
and
joy. So many priceless gifts to take on my journey -- my Lord's and
mine.
Then we were off again. He said, "Give the gifts away -- they're extra
baggage now -- there'll be more gifts to come." So I did, I gave them to
people we met, and found that in giving I also received, and my burden
was
lighter.

I didn't trust him at first to be in control of my life. I thought He'd
wreck it -- but I discovered he knows how to handle even the roughest
roads
in my life. Now I'm learning to be quiet and pedal in the strangest
places.
I'm beginning to enjoy the view, the challenge of the ride, as well as
the
cool breeze on my face with my delightful constant companion -- Jesus
Christ.

When it seems I just can't take anymore, I keep my eyes and faith on
Him. He
looks at me, with a big smile, and says: ". . . Keep on Pedaling."

Addendum -- Isaiah 41:10 "Don't be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be
dismayed, for I am Your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I
will
uphold you with my victorious hand."

IF I COULD CATCH A RAINBOW

If I could catch a rainbow
I would do it just for you
and share with you its beauty
On the days you're feeling blue.

If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own
A place to find serenity
A place to be alone

If I could take your troubles
I would toss them in the sea
But all these things I'm finding
are impossible for me.

I cannot build a mountain
Or catch a rainbow fair
But let me be what I know best-
A friend who's always there.

Priority in Living

The priority in living is not to live under the glamors of what others
do
for
themselves, but what you can do best to live your God given human life.

[A] Glamorous but worthless

You don't actually have to answer the quiz in A and B but read through
it to
grab the meaning behind raising the query. Just read the entire article
to
get
the point.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss World
contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
5. Name the last six years' Academy Award winners for best performances
and
movies.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

Well, How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are
no
second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields, but
* The applause dies
* The Awards tarnish
* The Achievements are forgotten
The Accolades, trophies, plaques and certificates are buried with their
owners. Old gets forgotten. Newer takes its place. Newer gets older. So
what
is
to
you?

[B] Ordinary but Priceless

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers, who guided your journey
through school and education process.
2. Name three friends who stood by you through
difficult periods of your life.
3. Name five people who have taught you something
worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel
appreciated.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have
inspired you to live your life.

How did you do on this one: Find it comfortable?

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the
most
glamour, most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are
the
ones that you are close to and those who care for you and for whom you
care.
The
real glamour is one in your heart for the people who touch you and to
whom
you touch. Someone under that remote limelight means little.

Two Stories

Story One

During the course of World War II, many people gained fame in one way or
another. One man was Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to an
aircraft carrier in the Pacific.

One time his entire squadron was assigned to fly a particular mission.
After
he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone
had
forgotten to top off his fuel tank. Because of this, he would not have
enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight
leader told him to leave formation and return. As he was returning to
the
mother ship, he could see a squadron of Japanese Zeroes heading toward
the
fleet to attack. And with all the fighter planes gone, the fleet was
almost
defenseless. His was the only opportunity to distract and divert them.
Single-handedly, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes and
attacked
them.

The American fighter planes were rigged with cameras, so that as they
flew
and fought, pictures were taken so pilots could learn more about the
terrain, enemy maneuvers, etc. Butch dove at them and shot until all his
ammunition was gone, then he would dive and try to clip off a wing or
tail
or anything that would make the enemy planes unfit to fly. He did
anything
he could to keep them from reaching the American ships. Finally, the
Japanese squadron took off in another direction, and Butch O'Hare and
his
fighter, both badly shot up, limped back to the carrier.

He told his story, but not until the film from the camera on his plane
was
developed, did they realize the extent he really went to--- to protect
his
fleet. He was recognized as a hero and given one of the nation's highest
military honors.

And, as you may know, O'Hare Airport in Chicago was named after him.

Story Two

Prior to this time, in Chicago, there was a man called Easy Eddie. He
was
working for a man you've all heard about, Al Capone. Al Capone wasn't
famous
for anything heroic, but he was notorious for the murders he'd committed
and
the illegal acts he'd done.

Easy Eddie was Al Capone's lawyer and he was very good. In fact, because
of
his skill, he was able to keep Al Capone out of jail. To show his
appreciation, Al Capone paid him very well. He not only earned big
money, he
would get extra things, like a residence that filled an entire Chicago
City
block. The house was fenced, and he had live-in help and all of the
conveniences of the day.

Easy Eddie had a son. He loved his son and gave him all the best things
while he was growing up; clothes, cars, and a good education. And,
because
he loved his son he tried to teach him right from wrong. But one thing
he
couldn't give his son was a good name, and a good example.

Easy Eddie decided that this was much more important than all the riches
he
had given him. So, he went to the authorities in order to rectify the
wrong
he had done. In order to tell the truth, it meant he must testify
against Al
Capone, and he knew that Al Capone would do his best to have him killed.
But
he wanted most of all to try to be an example and to do the best he
could to
give back to his son, a good name. So, he testified. Within the year, he
was
shot and killed on a lonely street in Chicago.

The Clincher

These sound like two unrelated stories, but Butch O'Hare was Easy
Eddie's
son.

When Easy Eddie O'Hare died, police removed from his pockets a rosary, a
crucifix, a religious medallion and a poem clipped from a magazine.

The poem read:

The clock of life is wound but once
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.
Now is the only time you own.
Live, love, toil with a will.
Place no faith in time.
For the clock may soon be still.

The Tea Cup

This is a great story that we could all benefit from.
It is a simple reminder of how "GOD" is the potter of
our life and we are the clay. "GOD" is the shaper of
each of our lives and when struggles seem
overwhelming, we need to remind ourselves that these
struggles serve a purpose in making us stronger,
wiser, and in the perfect image that "GOD" has for
each of His creations.

There was a couple who used to go to England to shop
in the beautiful stores. They both liked antiques and
pottery and especially teacups. This was their
twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

One day in this beautiful shop they saw a beautiful
teacup. They said, "May we see that? We've never seen
one quite so beautiful." As the lady handed it to
them, suddenly the teacup spoke.

"You don't understand," it said. "I haven't always
been a teacup.There was a time when I was red and I
was clay. My master took me and rolled me and patted
me over and over and I yelled out, 'Let me alone', but
he only smiled, 'Not yet.'

"Then I was placed on a spinning wheel," the teacup
said, "and suddenly I was spun around and around and
around. Stop it! I'm getting dizzy! I screamed. But
the master only nodded and said, 'Not yet.'

Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I
wondered why he wanted to burn me, and I yelled and
knocked at the door. I could see him through the
opening and I could read his lips as he shook his
head, 'Not yet.'

Finally the door opened, he put me on the shelf, and I
began to cool. 'There, that's better', I said. And he
brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were
horrible. I thought I would gag. 'Stop it, stop it!' I
cried. He only nodded, 'Not yet.'

Then suddenly he put me back into the oven, not like
the first one. This was twice as hot and I knew I would
suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed. I cried.
All the time I could see him through the opening
nodding his head saying, 'Not yet.'

Then I knew there wasn't any hope. I would never make
it. I was ready to give up. But the door opened and he
took me out and placed me on the shelf. One hour later
he handed me a mirror and I couldn't believe it was
me. It's beautiful. I'm beautiful.'

'I want you to remember, then,' he said, 'I know it
hurts to be rolled and patted, but if I had left you
alone, you would have dried up. I know it made you
dizzy to spin around on the wheel, but if I had
stopped, you would have crumbled. I knew it hurt and
was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn't
put you there, you would have cracked. I know the
fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all
over, but if I hadn't done that, you never would have
hardened; you would not have had any color in your
life. And if I hadn't put you back in that second
oven, you wouldn't survive for very long because the
hardness would not have held. Now you are a
finished product. You are what I had in mind when I
first began with you'.

MORAL: "GOD" knows what He's doing for all of us. He
is the potter, and we are His clay. He will mold us
and make us, so that we may be made into a flawless
piece of work to fulfill His good,
pleasing, and perfect will, which we can never escape.
