Little Candle

Once upon a time a little candle stood in a room filled with other
candles, most of them much larger and much more beautiful than she was.
Some were ornate and some were rather simple, like herself. Some were
white, some were blue, some were pink, some were green. She had no idea
why she was there, and the other candles made her feel rather small and
insignificant.

When the sun went down and the room began to get dark, she noticed a
large man walking toward her with a ball of fire on a stick. She
suddenly realized that the man was going to set her on fire. "No, no!!"
she cried, "Aaaaagghhh! Don't burn me, please!" But she knew that she
could not be heard and prepared for the pain that would surely follow.

To her surprise, the room filled with light. She wondered where it came
from since the man had extinguished his fire stick. To her delight, she
realized that the light came from herself.

Then the man struck another fire stick and, one by one, lit the other
candles in the room. Each one gave out the same light that she did.

During the next few hours, she noticed that, slowly, her wax began to
flow. She became aware that she would soon die. With this realization
came a sense of why she had been created. "Perhaps my purpose on earth
is to give out light until I die," she mused. And that's exactly what
she did. God created you and I to produce light in a dark world.

Like that little candle, we all can produce the same amount of light, no
matter how small we are or what color we might be. But we can't produce
light until we receive it from an outside source. That source is God,
the light of the world.

How Heavy Is Your Bag

One of my teachers had each one of us bring a clear plastic bag and a
sack of potatoes. For every person we'd refuse to forgive in our life,
we were told to choose a potato, write on it the name and date, and put
it in the plastic bag. Some of our bags, as you can imagine, were quite
heavy.

We were then told to carry this bag with us everywhere for one week,
putting it beside our bed at night, on the car seat when driving, next
to our desk at work.

The hassle of lugging this around with us made it clear what a weight we
were carrying spiritually, and how we had to pay attention to it all the
time to not forget, and keep leaving it in embarrassing places.

Naturally, the condition of the potatoes deteriorated to a nasty slime.
This was a great metaphor for the price we pay for keeping our pain and
heavy negativity!

Too often we think of forgiveness as a gift to the other person, and
while that's true, it clearly is also a gift for ourselves!

So the next time you decide you can't forgive someone, ask yourself...
Isn't MY bag heavy enough

And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive
him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

The Boomerang

Whether you realize it or not, you are throwing the boomerang today. As
you know, a boomerang is an angular club you toss away from you that
eventually returns to you. In the game of life, you throw the boomerang
daily, in the form of actions and behaviors that you send out into the
world, and which return to you at some later date -- often multiplied on
the rebound.

You've probably heard this principle stated in different ways,
including, What goes around comes around. Or the Biblical phrases, Give
and it shall be given unto you and As you sow, so shall you reap.

But how does this principle apply to your day-to-day life Simply put, if
you treat others with love and respect, you will find that others will
generally love and respect you. If you serve others, you will likely be
served. Of course, this law also applies to negative behaviors. If you
are critical and judgmental, don't be surprised when you are criticized
and judged.

Many people don't believe in the boomerang principle because they fail
to view it with a long term perspective. In fact, the return for your
actions is seldom immediate. There is often a delay between your actions
and the rebounding consequences.

People also have trouble with this concept because they look for the
return to come from the same person to whom they gave something. It
doesn't usually work that way. You'll never know where the return will
be coming from -- or when it will arrive -- but it always comes.

It's really quite simple send it out and receive it back. So, if you
want to receive love....give love. If you want people to appreciate
you....show your appreciation for others. And if you want others to help
you, then lend a helping hand yourself.

You have the power to create the life you want. It all depends on how
you throw the boomerang!

Balanced View Of Life

One man was standing at the top of a flight of stairs, the second at the
bottom and the third in the middle.

The first said, "The steps go downward."

The second said, "The steps go upward."

What is the third man's observation? That , "They run both up and down".

The balanced view of life includes all viewpoints, not merely the one
seen from a currently preferred position. Your view depends on where you
stand. Everyone is right from his her own point of view.

Honesty

Morality may consist solely in the courage of making a choice.
Wickedness is
always easier than virtue, for it takes a short cut to everything. But
over
time you learn, you can't make wrong work.

There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And your
only
reward is that it's easy. You cannot do wrong without suffering wrong.

Work joyfully and peacefully, knowing that right thoughts and right
efforts
will inevitably bring about right results.

You can never lose anything that really belongs to you, and you can't
keep
that which belongs to someone else.

You always experience the consequences of your own acts. If your acts
are
right, you'll get good consequences; if not, you'll suffer for it.

Sooner or later everyone sits down to a banquet of consequences.

WORTH READING 18 July 2006

Which one are you?

Carrot, Egg, and Coffee
A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a
cup of coffee the same way again. A young woman went to her mother
and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She
did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She
was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was
solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water
and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the
first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the
last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil, without
saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She
fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the
eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and
placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, "Tell me what
you see." "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She
did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter
to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed
the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the
coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter
then asked, "What does it mean, mother?" Her mother explained that
each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water.
Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and
unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it
softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer
shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the
boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans
were unique, however.
After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.
"Which are you?" she asked her daughter. "When adversity knocks on
your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee
bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong,
but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my
strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes
with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a
break-up, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become
hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am
I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart? Or am I
like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the
very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot,it
releases the fragrance and flavour. If you are like the bean, when
things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation
around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you
elevate
yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a
carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? May you have enough happiness to make
you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you
human and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people don't
necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of
everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always
be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you
let go of your past
failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and
everyone around you was smiling.

Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and
everyone around you is crying. You might want to send this message to
those people who mean something to you (I JUST DID); to those who have
touched your life in one way or another; to those who make you smile
when you really need it; to those who make you see the brighter side
of things when you are really down; to those whose friendship you
appreciate; to those who are so meaningful in your life. If you don't
send it, you will just miss out on the opportunity to brighten
someone's day with this message! It's easier to build a child than
repair an adult. This is so true -May we all be COFFEE.

Shoes

As Mahatma Gandhi stepped aboard a train one day, one of his shoes
slipped
off and landed on the track. He was unable to retrieve it as the train
was
moving.

To the amazement of his companions, Gandhi calmly took off his other
shoe
and threw it back along the track to land close to the first.

Asked by a fellow passenger why he did so, Gandhi smiled. "The poor man
who
finds the shoes lying on the track," he replied, "will now have a pair
he

The Bear and the Two Travelers

Two men were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly met them on their
path.

One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the
branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the
ground, and when the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt
him
all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as
much as
he could.

The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body.

When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and
jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in
his
ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with
a
friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."

Beautiful Story of Dreams

Sometimes we get what we need and not what we want..........

Once there were 3 trees on a hill in the woods. They were discussing
their
hopes & dreams when the 1st tree said, "Someday, I hope to be a treasure
chest. I could be filled with gold, silver & precious gems & be
decorated
with intricate carvings. Everyone would see my beauty."

The 2nd tree said, "Someday, I will be a mighty ship. I'll take kings &
queens across the waters & sail to the corners of the world. Everyone
will
feel safe in me because of the strength of my hull."

Finally, the 3rd tree said, "I want to grow to be the tallest &
straightest
tree in the forest. People will see me on top of the hill & look up to
my
branches & think of the heavens & God and how close to them I'm
reaching. I
will be the greatest tree of all time, and people will always remember
me."

After a few years of praying that their dreams would come true, a group
of
woodsmen came upon the trees. One came to the 1st tree and said, "This
looks
like a strong tree, I think I should be able to sell the wood to a
carpenter," and he began cutting it down. The tree was happy, because he
knew that the carpenter would make him into a treasure chest.

At the 2nd tree, one of the other woodsman said, "This looks like a
strong
tree. I should be able to sell it to the shipyard." The 2nd tree was
happy,
because he knew he was on his way to becoming a mighty ship.

When the woodsmen came upon the 3rd tree, the tree was frightened,
because
it knew that, if it was cut down, its dreams would not come true. One of
the
woodsmen said, "I don't need anything special from my tree, so I'll take
this one," and he cut it down.

When the 1st tree arrived at the carpenter's, he was made into a feed
box
for animals, placed in a barn and filled with hay. This was not at all
what
he had prayed for.

The 2nd tree was cut and made into a small fishing boat. His dreams of
being
a mighty ship & carrying kings had come to an end. The 3rd tree was cut
into
large pieces & left alone in the dark.

The years went by, and the trees forgot about their dreams. Then a man &
woman came to the barn. She gave birth & they placed the baby in the hay
in
the feed box that was made from the 1st tree. The man wished that he
could
have made a crib for the baby, but this manger would have to do. The
tree
could feel the importance of this event & knew that it had held the
greatest
treasure of all time.

Years later, a group of men got in the fishing boat made from the 2nd
tree.
One of them was tired and went to sleep. While they were out on the
water, a
great storm arose, and the tree didn't think it was strong enough to
keep
the men safe. The men woke the sleeping man, and he stood & said
"Peace,"
and the storm stopped. At this time, the tree knew that it had carried
the
King of Kings in its boat.

Finally, someone came & got the 3rd tree. It was carried through the
streets, and the crowd mocked the man who was carrying it. Finally, the
man
was nailed to the tree & raised in the air to die at the top of a hill.
When
Sunday came, the tree came to realize that it was strong enough to stand
at
the top of the hill & be as close to God as was possible, because Jesus
had
been crucified on it.

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS THAT, WHEN THINGS DON'T SEEM TO BE GOING YOUR
WAY, ALWAYS KNOW THAT GOD HAS A PLAN FOR YOU. IF YOU PLACE YOUR TRUST IN
HIM, HE WILL GIVE YOU GREAT GIFTS. EACH OF THE TREES GOT WHAT THEY
WANTED,
JUST NOT IN THE WAY THEY HAD IMAGINED. WE DON'T ALWAYS KNOW WHAT GOD'S
PLANS
ARE FOR US. We JUST KNOW THAT HIS WAYS ARE NOT OUR WAYS.

May This Encourage You, Always

Don't spend major time with minor people.
If there are people in your life who continually disappoint you, break
promises, stomp on your dreams, are too judgmental, have different
values
and don't have your back during difficult times...that is not
friendship.

To have a friend, be a friend.
Sometimes in life as you grow, your friends will either grow or go.
Surround
yourself with people who reflect values, goals interests and lifestyles.

When I think of any of my successes,
I am thankful to God from whom all blessings flow, and to my family and
friends who enrich my life.

Over the years my phone book has changed because I changed, for the
better.
At first, you think you're going to be alone, but after awhile, new
people
show up in your life that make it so much sweeter and easier to endure.

Remember what your elders used to say,
"Birds of a feather flock together.
If you're an eagle, don't hang around chickens:
Chickens can't fly!"

A New Day

The sun has begun to set and I hang up the smile I've worn all day.
Though I
will make sure it is the first thing I put back on in the morning
because
just in case it is 'that day,' I want her to see me at my very best.

I do the normal routine, eat dinner, clean the house, write -- the usual
stuff.

And then I lay down hoping to fall asleep quickly so my new day will
hurry
up and arrive. A new day with a brand new sun.

But as I lay there and wait for the world to turn half way around, I
think
about her. And sometimes I smile, and sometimes that smile will turn
into a
snicker, and then often that snicker will turn into a burst of laughter.

And then there are times I get that lump in my throat and that tight
feeling
in my chest, and sometimes that feeling overwhelms me and begins to turn
into a tear, and often that tear multiplies itself and I can no longer
fight
the feeling and I lose the battle.

Then somehow through either the joy or the sadness I drift and find
myself
asleep. Then the dreams begin and keep me company until my new day
arrives.

When I awake it's with such excitement! Because I tell myself this could
be
the day that every other day has led up to and the first day of the rest
of
my life. I quickly dawn my smile, because I do so want her to see me at
my
very best. Then I look out the window even though I know it's dawn, but
I
still have to confirm I've been given another chance to find her.

And there it is ... the sun, even when it's cloudy; somehow I still see
it.
And it smiles at me and I say "thank you" and I smile back.

Then I ask myself, "Is this the day?" And the excitement rushes over me
again. And then I ask myself, "Where's it going to be?"

Maybe it'll be at the water fountain and unexpectedly there I'll find
her
and much more than my thirst will be quenched.

Maybe it'll be at the grocery store, and there she'll appear as I'm
picking
out fruit and she'll show me the difference between fresh and spoiled.
Then
from that moment, nothing that I will eat will ever taste the same.
Because
she'll bring out the simplest beauties in everything I see, taste,
smell,
hear, or touch.

Or maybe today will be the day when my Angel brings an item up to the
cash
register without its price tag. And as I wait behind this Angel with all
the
frustrated people who are in such a hurry about their busy lives, I will
find myself with such blessed extra time. Just enough time to start a
conversation with this beautiful vision standing behind me that I might
not
otherwise would have noticed. But because of a "price check on register
5,"
I was able to find her.

So will today be the day I say, "THANK YOU GOD!" Thank you for the sun,
which began my new day. Thank you for granting me the faith when I arose
this morning that I would find her in this new day. But most of all,
thank
you for me not having to ever wait on another sunrise. Because whenever
I
want to see it, I will look at her and there it shall always be, in her
eyes, she will forever hold it for me.

She is my sunrise, my dawn, my new day.

Little Things

Too often we don't realize
what we have until it is gone;
Too often we wait too late to say
"I'm sorry - I was wrong."
Sometimes it seems we hurt the ones
we hold dearest to our hearts;
And we allow foolish things
to tear our lives apart.

Far too many times we let
unimportant things into our minds;
And then it's usually too late
to see what made us blind.

So be sure that you let people know
how much they mean to you;
Take that time to say the words
before your time is through.

Be sure that you appreciate
everything you've got
And be thankful for the
Little things in life
that mean a lot.

Facing River of Difficulties

A very tired traveler came to the banks of a river.

There was no bridge by which he could cross. It was winter, and the
surface
of the river was covered with ice. It was getting dark, and he wanted to
reach the other side while there was enough light to see. He debated
about
whether or not the ice would bear his weight.

Finally, after much hesitation and fear, he got down on his knees and
began
very cautiously to creep across the surface of the ice. He hoped that by
disturbing the weight of his body, the ice would be less apt to break
under
the load.

After he made his slow and painful journey about halfway across the
river,
he suddenly heard the sound of singing behind him. Out of the dusk,
there
came a 4-horse load of coal driven by a man singing merrily as he went
to
his carefree way. Here was the traveler, fearfully inching his way on
his
hands and knees. And there, as if whisked along by the winter's wind,
went
the driver, his horses, his sled, and the heavy load of coal over the
same
river!

The story illustrates how many of us go through life.

Some stand on the bank of decisions unable to make up their minds about
the
course to take. Others stand on the banks trying to muster enough
courage
to cross over to the other side of the task or problem encountered. On
the
other hand, some individuals crawl and creep through life for fear of
thin
ice.

Their faith is not strong enough to hold them up.

Still there are those who whisked along whistling as they go. Their
faith
is UNSHAKABLE.

......When we face the river of difficulties, we do not have to fear,
nor do
we creep through life. God has promised to help, and with God's help we
can
merrily make our way to the other side safely.

Judgement

Judgement means a stale state of mind. And mind always wants
judgement, because to be in a process is always hazardous and
uncomfortable.
Be very very courageous, don't stop growing, live in
the moment, simply stay in the flow of life.

This story happened in the days of Lao Tzu in China, and Lao Tzu
loved it very much:

There was an old man in a village, very poor, but even kings were
jealous of him because he had a beautiful white horse. Kings offerred
fabulous prizes for the horse, but the man would say, "This horse is
not a horse to me, he is a person. And how can you sell a person, a
friend?" The man was poor, but he never sold the horse.

One morning he found that the horse was not in the stable. The whole
village gathered and said, "You foolish old man! We knew that someday
the horse would be stolen. It would have been better to sell it. What
a misfortune!"

The old man said, "Don't go so far as to say that. Simply say that
the horse is not in the stable. This is the fact; everything else is
judgement.
Whether it is a misfortune or a blessing I don't know, because this
is just a fragment. Who knows what is going to follow it?"

People laughed at the old man. They had always known he was a little
crazy. But after fifteen days, suddenly one night the horse returned.
He had not been stolen, he had escaped into the wild. And not only
that he had brought a dozen wild horses with him.

Again the people gathered and they said, "Old man, you were right.
This was not a misfortune, it has indeed proved to be a blessing."

The old man said, "Again you are going too far. Just say that the
horse is back...who knows whether it is a blessing or not?" It is
only a fragment.
You read a single word in a sentence - how can you judge the whole
book?"

This time the people could not say much, but inside they knew that he
was wrong. Twelve beautiful horses had come.

The old man had an only son who started to train the horses. Just a
week later he fell from a horse and his legs were broken. The people
gathered again and again they judged. They said, " Again you proved
right! It was a misfortune. your only son has lost the use of his
legs, and in your old age he was your only support. Now you are
poorer than ever."

The old man said, "You are obsessed with judgement. Don't go that
far. Say only that my son had broken his legs. Life comes in
fragments and more is never given to you."

It happened that after a few weeks the country went to war, and all
the young men of the town were forcibly taken for the military. Only
the old man's son was left because he was crippled. The whole town
was crying and weeping, because it was a losing fight and they knew
that most of the young people would never come back. They came to the
old man and they said, " You were right, old man - this has proved a
blessing. maybe your son is crippled, but he is still with you. Our
sons are gone forever."

The old man said again, " You go on and on judging. Nobody knows!
Only say this, that your sons have been forced to enter the army and
my son has not been forced. But only God, the total, knows whether it
is a blessing or a misfortune."

Judge not, otherwise you will never become one with the total. With
fragments you will be obsessed, with small things you will jump to
conclusions. Once you judge you have stopped growing. Judgement means
a stale state of mind. And mind always wants judgement, because to be
in a process is always hazardous and uncomfortable.

In fact the journey never ends. One path ends, another begins: one
door closes, another opens. You reach a peak; a higher peak is always
there. God is an endless journey. Only those who are so courageous
that they dont bother about the goal but are content with the
journey, content to just live in the moment and grow into it, only
those are able to walk in the total.

Motivation : The Key To Success

Lou Little was foot ball coach at Georgetown University. The college
president came to him one day and said Do you know Harold Chapman? Sure,
Lou answered. He has been on my squad for years. An average player .
The
problem is that he is not well motivated.

Well, the president continued, we just received a message that his
father
died. Will you break the news to him.

The coach put his arm around Chapman and told him the sad news. I am
sorry
son, you take a week off. But the next day Chapman was in the locker
room
suiting up for the game. What are you doing here the coach inquired in
amazement.

Todays the big game. I have got to play in it he replied.

But you know I have never included you for the game

Include me today and you won't be sorry, the moisteyed player stated
very
firmly.

Softening, the coach decided that if he won the toss he would use him on
the
first play. He could not do that much damage on the kickoff return.
Georgetown won the toss.

At the game, Harold came tearing down the field with the ball like a
tornado. The coach, shocked, left him in for another play and then
another.
He blocked, he tacked; he passed; he ran. He literally won the ball
game
for Georgetown University that day.

In the locker room the coach, perplexed, asked, Son, what happened The
player said... My father was blind. Only today he witnessed my game

Motivation provides stimulus. He believed that his father would see his
game after his death. This belief motivated him to play exceedingly
well !

Worries

A wayfarer carried a heavy sack about which he complained unceasingly.
From
none could he get help or comfort.

And as he slowly journeyed, groaning under his burden, the Angel of
Optimism
came to him and spoke kindly, saying Brother, what does thou carry The
man
answered surlily, My worries.

The angel smiled pityingly upon him and said, Let us look into thy
burden
and examine thy worries. And so they looked in. But lo! the sack was
empty.

Why surely, cried the man, there were two great worries, too heavy for
me to
bear. But-ah, yes, I had forgot-one was a worry of yesterday, and so it
is
gone.

And the other That - that was a worry of tomorrow, and it - it has not
yet
come.

Then the angel smiled with infinite pity, saying Hearken! He who bows
himself down under the worries of yesterday and tomorrow wears himself
out
for naught. But he who carries only the worries of today has no need of
a
sack for his sorrows. If thou will cast this black thing aside, and give
all
thy strength and cheer and courage to the things of today, real
misfortune
never can burden thee.

Wondering, the man did as the angel commanded. And as he took up his
journey
and went lightly, swiftly on, his heart and his hands were free to
relieve
many a brother wayfarer of his burden and to pluck sweet fruits and
flowers
along the wayside.

And when he came at last to the setting of the sun it was with smiles
and a
song.

Palindromes

"According to many language experts, the most difficult kind of
phrase to create is a palindrome, a sentence or group of sentences
that reads the same backward and forward. A few examples:

- Red rum, sir, is murder.

- Ma is as selfless as I am.

- Nurse, I spy gypsies. Run!

- A man, a plan, a canal - Panama.

- Mirth sir, a gay asset? No, don't essay a garish trim.
