Worth Reading 20 Sep 2004

It's a beautiful day,
- Kanika Nagpal

but I live in the middle of a city. I'm surrounded by concrete and bricks,
metal and plastics, artificial sights and sounds. True, the sun still shines
down bathing the world in warmth, but the glory is stolen when the light
shines off broken glass littering the streets. Yes, the wind still washes
over the landscape animating the trees and flowers, but the wind also
carries with it the stench of exhaust, the fumes of industry. The birds sing
as sweetly as ever, their melodious voices creating a sense of peace, but
the morning calm is soon disrupted by the discordant roar of engines and the
cries of the malcontent.
Why then, should I venture out if those simple joys that might have enticed
me to explore the world are drowned out by an unnatural cacophony?
Better that I stay inside rejoicing in remembered beauty than allow my
senses to be raped by the barrage of humanization, lest my precious memories
lose their magnificence…
