If You Are A Parent
- by Azim H Premji

If you are a parent, you have many aspirations for your child that may
include him or her becoming a doctor, an engineer, scientist or another
kind
of successful professional. I believe these aspirations are driven by
your
thinking about your child's future, and her centrality in your life.

Since good education is often the passport to a good future, I presume
it
leads you to getting your child admitted to a good school. Then you
encourage your child to study hard and do well in the school exams. To
bolster this, you send him or her for tuition classes. This would have
primed your child for board exam and entrance exams, thereby leading to
admission into a good professional course. Doing well at college
increases
the probability of landing a good job. And a good job means the child's
future is ensured.

I am neither a psychologist nor an educationist, and what I will now
state
may seem counter-intuitive. I think that these aspirations and actions
might
be doing more harm than good to your child. To understand why ; we need
to
re-examine some of our fundamental assumptions.

In the first place, I have seen time and again that living : for some
distant future goal also means you do not live in the present. The
distant
goal will always translate into an external measure of success, such as
exams. And most exam - focused children start forgetting what it means
to be
a child, to be curious, mischievous, exploring, falling, getting up,
relating, discovering, inventing, doing, playing.

Childhood is very precious; precious enough not be wasted by the
artificial
pressures of contrived competition, by too many hours of bookish study ;
and
by school report cards that simplistically wrap up an entire human being
in
numbers.

The second assumption is that education is merely a ticket to
socio-economic
success. Give the state of our country ; this reality cannot be ignored.
But
restricting education to only this aspect is, I think, a very limiting
notion of the aim of good education. The primary purpose of a school is
to
guide the child in her discovery of herself and her world, and to
identify
and nurture the child's talents. Just as every seed contains the future
tree, each child is born with infinite potential. Imagine a school which
sees children as seeds to be nurtured - here the teacher is a gardener
who
helps to bring out the potential already present in the child.

This is very different from the current view which sees the child as
clay to
be molded - where the teacher and parents are potters deciding what
shape
the clay should take. There is an old (and forgotten) Chinese saying :
"Give
a seed to a potter, and you will get a bonsai".

Even in a commercial organization, to make profits we do not have to
chase
profits. Rather, we need to build an institution that gives every
employee
an opportunity to do meaningful and fulfilling work.

Create an organization driven by values of innovation, integrity,
customer
centricity and care. And as you practice these values everyday and
moment,
you will see the profits take care of themselves.

Similarly ; dear parent, this is my request to you. Do not give up your
child's present to secure his or her future. Give your child the freedom
to
truly explore life with abandon. In doing this, you will see your child
flower into a creative and sensitive human being. And when this happens,
everything else - money ; social success, security - will fall into
place
automatically.

Let your child be a child.

Tonight I Dream, Tomorrow I Live

Ah! Do you dream at night?
Is a dream of light or twilight,
Of hope or of joy maybe?
I describe it as an escape,
A way of being happy
In a world we can entirely shape.

Ah! Did you dream last night?
Mystical powers at hand,
And energy replenished to the fullest.
In fact, you dream to rest
And live for a next sunlight.
Am I truly right
Or you don't understand?

Ah! Did you live today?
Watching, breathing and tasting
The merry life of each day.
Every element I'm sensing
Has a value to my humble heart.
Therefore I will be, for my part,
What I am destined to be.

Ah! Will you live tomorrow?
Know that there is always a way
Leading through our destiny.
See it, feel it you may
Staying on it won't be easy.
So, take my hand and follow.

In My Mind

Is a clear, brisk night at the beach
better than a good storm
Hearing that song that only relates to one moment,
one person
Knowing that you have made a difference in someone's life
even if only one
Hearing waves pound on the sand
when you need to clear your mind
Knowing someone thinks
you are a great person
What if you would have told that special person your feeling earlier,
whose world would be better
Remembering childhood memories
and sharing them with someone who cares
Watching the love of your life smile
if for no reason at all
Knowing things should be perfect
wishing they were
Wondering what my one
wish would be
Have I created myself
or merely followed a path
Who judges me by what I do
and does it matter
Can life be any better
can it be any worse
Is someone reading your script
Am I really OK with dying
Have I done everything I need to do
Are my kids as happy as they can be
Why was I put on this earth
and am I accomplishing that purpose
Is there anyone listening
or am I alone

Risk

There are no guarantees
Life throws things at you
You can catch or miss them
But they will come, ready or not

I always looked for the real thing
Never trusting in the possibility
Risk-taking not my forte
Staying safe at all costs

Even playing it safe is not certain
Safe has hurt me
Zero risk gets zero gain
Sometimes playing it safe costs you more

It has me,
In not fighting the battle
you may lose the war
In not believing in a dream
You may never sleep peacefully again

So let go of the fear
Reach out for the flame
So what if you get burned
Better that then numb for life

Better to remember passion and joy
Along with the pain and tears
Then to have no memories worth
Remembering

So to hell with safe
I am going to gamble and bet
Until I win back everything I lost
And my life is what it was meant to be

Start Again...

I looked at world through glass,
Watching its people pass,
I thought nobody would touch me,
That I'm safe.

But the world blew cold, in the depths of my soul,
The deed was done, it was too late,
Menacingly ruthless souls walked all over me,
Crushing past me as if I am a nobody nowhere.

Where I never thought they would not upset me,
I was too late for they hurt me and made me cry.
I ran away from the world, to hide in the corners of my mind alone,
Thinking I could save my heart, but I could'nt n' it bled.

Now -
In a room without windows, in the company of shadows,
I know they wont leave me, they'll take me in,
Emotionally shattered, for the pain mattered,
I did let it upset me.

But, now having my lessons learnt,
I've decided, I'll S T A R T A G A I N...

Smiling Thru Da Storm

There was a little girl who walked to and from school every day. One
day,
though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were
forming,
she set out on her daily trek to the elementary school.

As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with thunder
and
lightning. Her mother was concerned that her daughter would be
frightened as
she walked home from school and she herself feared that the electrical
storm
might harm her child.

Following the roar of thunder, lightning, like a flaming sword, was
cutting
through the sky. Concerned, the mother quickly got into her car and
drove
along the route to her child's school. As she did so, she saw her little
girl walking along, but at each flash of lightning, the child would
stop,
look up and smile at the sky.

Another and another flash of lighning followed and with each the little
girl
would look up at the streak of light and smile. The mother pulled her
car up
beside the child, and she lowered the window and called to her, "What
are
you doing? Why do you keep stopping?"

The little girl answered, "I am trying to look pretty! God keeps taking
my
picture."

Elders say...

I'd often heard my elders say,
"Its a big bad world" - where you have to find your way !!

Young as I was happy n' gay,
To me it all meant a child's play;
Ignoring what the elders had to say,
I treaded to live life my way;
Endeavoring on everything that I could lay,
Blending with music, I swayed away;
With sunshine galore, I made all the hay,
Trusting every soul, I drifted away.

Little did I know that someday,
Knocking at my door, would come doomsday;
And my trusted aides would keep me at bay,
'coz today I needed them, it wasn't the other way.

Realization dawned on me, only when life went astray,
Now, I realized what elders meant in their say;
"Its a big bad world" - where you have to find your way!!

The Park Bench

The park bench was deserted as I sat down to read Beneath the long,
straggly
branches of an old willow tree. Disillusioned by life with good reason
to
frown, For the world was intent on dragging me down.

And if that weren't enough to ruin my day, A young boy out of breath
approached me, all tired from play. He stood right before me with his
head
tilted down And said with great excitement, "Look what I found!"

In his hand was a flower, and what a pitiful sight, With its petals all
worn
- not enough rain, or too little light. Wanting him to take his dead
flower
and go off to play, I faked a small smile and then shifted away.

But instead of retreating he sat next to my side And placed the flower
to
his nose And declared with overacted surprise, "It sure smells pretty
and
it's beautiful, too. That's why I picked it; here, it's for you." The
weed
before me was dying or dead. Not vibrant of colors: orange, yellow or
red.

But I knew I must take it, or he might never leave. So I reached for the
flower, and replied, "Just what I need." But instead of him placing the
flower in my hand, He held it mid-air without reason or plan.

It was then that I noticed for the very first time That weed-toting boy
could not see: he was blind.

I heard my voice quiver; tears shone in the sun As I thanked him for
picking
the very best one. You're welcome," he smiled, and then ran off to play,
Unaware of the impact he'd had on my day.

I sat there and wondered how he managed to see A self-pitying person
beneath
an old willow tree. How did he know of my self-indulged plight? Perhaps
from
his heart, he'd been blessed with true sight.

Through the eyes of a blind child, at last I could see The problem was
not
with the world; the problem was me. And for all of those times I myself
had
been blind, I vowed to see the beauty in life, And appreciate every
second
that's mine.

And then I held that wilted flower up to my nose And breathed in the
fragrance of a beautiful rose And smiled as I watched that young boy,
Another weed in his hand, About to change the life of an unsuspecting
old
man.

Failure

Failure
I feel it approaching
out of the darkness
out of the staleness

I see it first just as small as the light from a fire fly
It is a silent threat, not heard only felt
Like the storm you see quietly but forcefully
dancing on the horizon.

As it grows in its magnificence
My apprehensive heart beats against my chest
I feel it so close but I keep praying that it will stay far away
My heart pounds wildly until my breath escapes me
My life my existence has been nothing but a great paradox
leading to this moment in time.

There are so many
Their voices screaming in my mind
A thousand thoughts inside only one
How do I help them all
What if I allow one to fall.

Will it swallow them into the parade of lightning
into the abyss of blinding light
Will I too fall for not saving them
I always knew it was there
Safely waiting on the horizon

But I never felt this light would catch me this fast
I never thought the rain would fall upon my skin
But now here it is
Will I have the strength
Strength to make it go away

Only the agony of waiting for the future will tell
Just remember never let it come so close
That you can feel the mist upon you
Because the second you don't realize
the other end of the story

That is the second it grabs a hold on you.

The True Light

When you look into life,
You don't see what's inside;
For you look with your eyes
And not with your heart.

If you want to know the truth,
Then you have to close your eyes;
And open your heart
To see the true light.

Don't try to change
What was really there,
Just because what you saw
Brought you only despair.

The truth is the truth,
And it will never change -
No matter how much
You try to forget.

The Chains of Belief

As I was passing the elephants, I suddenly stopped, confused by the fact
that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to
their
front leg.

No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at
anytime,
break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not. I saw a
trainer near by and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just
stood there and made no attempt to get away.

"Well," he said, "when they are very young and much smaller we use the
same
size rope to tie them
and, at that age, it's enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are
conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can
still hold them, so they never try to break free."

I was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their
bonds
but because they believed they couldn't, they were stuck right where
they
were.

Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief

that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

GOD'S TOOL BOX

I dreamed I saw God's tool box
In Heaven on a shelf.
I asked if I could look inside,
He answered, "Help yourself!"

I lifted the lid up slowly
And peered inside to see
What kind of tools He uses
To work on humanity.

But when I looked inside,
I was surprised at what I saw;
After studying each of them,
I looked at Him in awe.

"This is what You use, Lord,
When dealing with Your own?
I expected tools more gentle,
Not chisels and grinding stones."

"Yes," He said, "My work requires
That I use tools like these --
To smooth the jagged edges
Left by selfishness and greed.

Nothing works like hardship
To bring men to their knees,
So they will turn from self and sin
To seek fellowship with Me."

"That one over there is pain,
But I use it only when I must;
It makes the spirit stronger
By building faith and trust.

And I call that one affliction;
I must use it from time to time
To soften hardened hearts
And make them more like Mine."

Then He reached inside once more
And pulled out a satin glove.
"This one is my favorite," He said,
"For I call this tool Love.

I use it to soothe the heartaches
Caused by your fellow men;
So you'll remember that I love you
And share that love with them."

"Now do you see, My child,
Why I choose to work in this way?
I'm only making you stronger
When I whittle sharp edges away."

Then He gently closed the lid
And I woke up from my dream.
But after looking inside His tool box,
How different this world seems

WORTH READING 14 Mar 2006

I am ...
A woman
With a full heart, hidden
Somewhere in an empty room ...
With eyes not quite of autumn's gold, and yet
Neither all of summer's green;

I wonder ...
If love is a tale made for children --
A granting of sweet dreams in their innocence --
A honey-coating to help their throats
Choke down the bitter draught ...

I hear ...
A voice that whispers warnings, half-formed,
Bodiless as hope, until I swear I cannot draw
Another breath unless this spectre be unmasked,
His lies mangled 'neath my righteous tread;

I see ...
A woman, proud, uncompromising,
Diaphanous as air -- less, even, than the tears
That fall in desolation about her weary feet,
Salt poison pooled upon the withered ground ...

I want ...
A measure of quietude, a certain silence,
The echo of alone which heals me of dreaming,
The nothing that stills the wanting,
The numb, the cold that laughs at pain;
I am
A woman,
hidden ...

I pretend ...
That I can live forever -- that Time
Has no puissance but that which I afford Him --
And so, I can wait, I can be happy tomorrow,
Sleep is for the dead; but its ghosts haunt my waking ...

I feel ...
Too much -- too deeply to be directionless,
Too real for imagining, and yet the familiar eyes
Hold nothing of recognition -- only my reflection --
A meeting of shadows in sunlit glass;

I touch ...
The downy wings of hope, in wonder,
In reverence, in need, in hunger;
Alas, it burns my fingers as a flame,
A sacrilege, self-defined ...

I worry ...
That I am alone; that in my longing
I have forsaken all -- but oh, what reward,
What smile divine should light the path to freedom --
And how can I but heed the siren's call?

I cry ...
For having too much, for fear of bursting,
And then, when by the pouring of my soul
I lie, a vessel emptied, I cry again
For what was had, and lost;

I am
A woman,
empty ...

I understand
That life is what you make it,
That sometimes, the coat of many colors
That marks your triumphs brightly, blends only
To loneliest of grey ...

I say
That we are made by life, shaped,
Broken, perhaps -- unmade and voided --
But always, the core of us remains, waiting
With only faith, with trust, to be reborn;

I dream
Of bluest waters, reaching
With unnatural hands toward the faded sky,
Of dolphins that wander in seas without limits,
Carrying me water-breathing past corals and clouds ...

I try ...
To lead by example, knowing
That merely the telling holds no power;
A gift of giving is merely a day, while
A gift of knowing spans forever;

I hope ...
That my darkness holds you gently,
That pain is halved by sharing, that feeling
Wields nothing past the words it summons,
Except that it touch you with only healing ...

I am
A woman,
only.

Your Presence

When life has it's trials
and on our cheek falls a tear,
We feel that we are alone
and there's no one to care.

Then God sends us an angel
from heaven above,
That showers us with loving care
and fills us with so much love.

Instead of skies that are grey
the skies have turned to blue,
In place of the rain drops
the sunshine comes through.

It fills my heart with such warmth
to know that you care,
And for the many times
you lifted my name in prayer.

I thank God every day
for giving me a friend so dear,
Because of your love and prayers
your presence is always near.

Gold Inside Us

Long times ago, in Egypt lived a famous mystical person name Zun-Nun. A
young man came to visit him and asked "Teacher, I do not understand why
people like you dress in such a way and very simple, isn't in this era
was
necessary to dress neatly, not only for performance but also for other
reasons?

The mystical only smiled and took his ring from one of his fingers, and
said
"Young friend, I will answer your question, but first do one thing for
me,
take this ring and go to the market across this street, can you sell
this
for one chip of gold?

Having looked at Zun-Nun's dirty ring, the young man became doubtful.
"One
chip of gold, I am not sure this ring could be sold at that price."

"Try first, young man, who knows you did it." The Young man went to the
market quickly. He offered the ring to the textile, vegetable, meat,
fish
traders, and the others. The fact was that no body was willing to pay
for a
chip of Gold. He went back to Zun-Nun residence and reported "Teacher,
no
body was brave to offer more than one chip of silver."

With a wise smile Zun-Nun said, "Now go to the Gold Shop at the back of
this
street. Show this to the owner or to the gold trader. Don't give your
price
just listen how much he will pay for this ring."

The Young man went to the shop mentioned and returned with a different
expression from his face. He then reported "Teacher, the traders in the
market really do not know the value of this ring, the gold trader offer
this
ring for one thousand of gold, And the value of this ring was one
thousands
times from what the traders in the market offer.

Zun-Nun just smiled subtly and spoke softly, "That was the answer of
your
questions my friend, "Someone cannot be valued only from his dress "The
traders in the market" give value like that. But not for "The gold
trader"

The gold and Diamond inside someone only could be seen and valued if you
could look at the inner soul. It needs heart to see, and it needs a
process.
We cannot see it from the words or attitude that only seen for a while.
Many
time what we think is a gold, is only a brass but a brass is a gold.

The Expressions Of Life

There are a million facial expressions
each with it's own meaning:

The teary-eyed of ashamed confessions
which can cut the deepest

The sadistic grin can give you the shivers
it can expose what's really within.

The frown of a beautiful face,
it can bring tears to my eyes.

But there is one I cannot place -
Love, there is no _expression,
just a feeling of being complete.

It's the only true cure for depression
but the best _expression is a passionate kiss
It can take away all your pain
and leave you in heavenly bliss

End Of Innocence
- by Christina Montano

Secrets, secrets
Lies, lies
She sits in her room,
and cries and cries.

There's no more trust
In this girl's heart.
She finally found out
That life isn't perfect.

She lived in dreams,
As children often do.
But she crawled out
Into the world everyone knew.

Things that once were.
Happiness once known;
The truth of it all
To her was shown.

Her little heart
Will never trust again.
She'll never know
A real true friend.

No more trust,
For no more lies.
She'll sit in her room
And cry and cry

The Trouble Tree

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farm house had just
finished
a rough first day on the job. A flat tire had caused him to miss an hour
of
work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pick-up truck refused
to
start.

As I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. When we arrived he invited
me
in to meet his family. As we walked to the front door, he paused briefly
at
a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When
opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face
was
wreathed in smiles; he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a
kiss.

Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed by the tree and my
curiosity
got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.

"Oh, that's my trouble tree," he replied. "I know I can't help having
troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, they don't belong in the
house with my wife and children. So, I just hang them on the tree when I
come home in the evening and then I just pick them up again in the
morning."

"Funny thing, though," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to
pick
'em up, there ain't nearly as many as I remembered hanging there the
night
before."

A Great Mind

The following concerns a question in a physics degree exam at the
University
of Copenhagen.

"Describe how to determine the height of a skyscraper with a barometer."

One student replied:

"You tie a long piece of string to the neck of the barometer, and then
lower
the barometer from the roof of the skyscraper to the ground. The length
of
the string plus the length of the barometer will equal the height of the
building."

This highly original answer so incensed the examiner that the student
was
failed. The student appealed on the grounds that his answer was
indisputably
correct, and the university appointed an independent arbiter to decide
the
case. The arbiter judged that the answer was indeed correct, but did the
problem it was decided to call the student in and allow him six minutes
in
which to provide a verbal answer which showed at least a minimal
familiarity
with the basic principles of physics.

For five minutes the student sat in silence, forehead creased in
thought.
The arbiter reminded him that time was running out, to which the student
replied that he had several extremely relevant answers, but couldn't
make up
his mind which to use.

On being advised to hurry up the student replied as follows:

"Firstly, you could take the barometer up to the roof of the skyscraper,
drop it over the edge, and measure the time it takes to reach the
ground.
The height of the building can then be worked out from the formula H =
0.5g
x t squared. But bad luck on the barometer."

"Or if the sun is shining you could measure the height of the barometer,
then set it on end and measure the length of its shadow. Then you
measure
the length of the skyscraper's shadow, and thereafter it is a simple
matter
of proportional arithmetic to work out the height of the skyscraper."

"But if you wanted to be highly scientific about it, you could tie a
short
piece of string to the barometer and swing it like a pendulum, first at
ground level and then on the roof of the skyscraper. The height is
worked
out by the difference in the gravitational restoring force T = 2 pi
sqroot
(l / g)."

"Or if the skyscraper has an outside emergency staircase, it would be
easier
to walk up it and mark off the height of the skyscraper in barometer
lengths, then add them up."

"If you merely wanted to be boring and orthodox about it, of course, you
could use the barometer to measure the air pressure on the roof of the
skyscraper and on the ground, and convert the difference in millibars
into
feet to give the height of the building."

"But since we are constantly being exhorted to exercise independence of
mind
and apply scientific methods, undoubtedly the best way would be to knock
on
the janitor's door and say to him 'If you would like a nice new
barometer, I
will give you this one if you tell me the height of this skyscraper'."

The student was Niels Bohr. He gave us the structure of an Atom, for
which
he won the Nobel Prize in 1922.

WORTH READING 2 Mar 2006

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
by William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: -
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company:
I gazed -and gazed -but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought.

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils.

WORTH READING 1 Mar 2006

I Am Someone

I am someone
I walked past a dead face
even though the person was alive
I saw my eyes in the mirror
and cried at the sight
I looked at a person I didn't know

and I met a friend
I got heads to turn
when I walked past
I learned a lot about myself
when I lost a new friend

I cried every tear in my body
when I thought about love
I got hit bad
then got back in the ring
I climbed a mountain of rocks
and saw an eagle fly over- head

I heard terrible things about myself
when no one thought I was listening
I realized I was strong
when I didnĀ¹t cry when it hurt

I found out who I was
when I was with someone else
I thought I was lost forever
when a friend found me
I held a life in my hand
and it was my own

I was a pawn in someone else's game
so I surrendered to a brook
I walked the fine line between surviving
and not wanting to survive
I still am
I am someone
